THE SCIENCE BEHIND SLEEPING ON YOUR LEFT SIDE

Have you ever asked yourself why our old grandparents tell the neighbors or other family members when someone dies that the person has slept on his left-hand side? Truth be told, they didn’t know the sciences behind it as the Holistic medicine practitioners and Ayurvedic medicine practitioners do.

There Are Three (3) Major Components Of The Circulatory System

The Blood
The Blood vessels
The Heart

Every day your heart beat 1000 times sending 2000 gallons of blood through your body. Blood vessels include veins, arteries, and capillaries. The heart is a soft organ which is basically made up of muscles which help in blood circulation through various parts of the body. The heart pumps blood through the body 72 times in a minute in the human body.

How Many Chambers Does The Heart Have?

The heart is made up of four compartments:
·         The Right atrium
·         The Left atrium
·         The Right ventricle
·         The Left ventricle

How Many Valves Do We Have In Our Heart?

The heart is made up of four valves:
·         The Tricuspid valve
·         The Mitral valve
·         The Aortic valve
·         The Pulmonic valve

What Specific Role Does The Heart Play?

The heart carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart via the pulmonary veins. The left atrium relaxes for the blood to pump through the heart. When the left atrium contracts the left ventricle relaxes simultaneously. The left atrium pushes the blood into the left ventricle through the one-way valve. The left ventricle contracts and the blood is pumped into the aorta, which carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body except the lungs. Oxygenated blood reaches different parts of the body through blood vessels called arteries, which branch off into capillaries and then reaches different organs of the body. The blood then becomes deoxygenated and then passes through the capillaries into blood vessels called veins. The veins then carry deoxygenated blood which is then carried to the heart by the vena cava. The deoxygenated blood from the different parts of the body enters the right upper compartment of the heart called the right atrium. It then contracts, allowing the blood to flow into the right ventricle, which contracts with the expansion of the right atrium through the one-way valve. The right ventricle then contracts, pushing the blood into the pulmonary artery. The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood back to the lungs for it to be oxygenated.

How should I sleep?

There are many known sleeping positions. The most common sleep positions include:
·         Fetal
·         Stomach
·         Log
·         Starfish (back with arms up),
·         Soldier (arms to the side on the back)
·        Yearner (side with arms more or less straight out in front)

Each sleeping position affects your health in one way or another. Now, when you sleep on your back breathing becomes very difficult especially in the case of Asthmatic patients.
Sleeping on the right side of your body is likely to cause the development of digestion problems. Thus, the food moves from the position in which it is out of its compartment and brings about digestion problems, whiles sleeping on your left side boosts the digestion process and improves your health.

What happens when I sleep on my left side?

The left side of your body controls most of your lymphatic system. Sleeping on your left side gives your lymphatic system enough time to filter toxins out of your system. It also filters lymph fluids and wastes via the thoracic duct and the lymph node, because the left side of your body is the strongest part of the lymphatic side.

What Are Some of the Benefits Of Sleeping On Your Left Side Aside The ones stated above?

Sleeping on the left side helps to improve digestion because of gravity acting on the left side allows waste produced after digestion to easily move from the large intestine into the lower colon. This means you are more likely to have a bowel movement when you wake up sleeping on the left side. Sleeping on the left side also allows the stomach and pancreas to lie naturally since the heart lies on the left side of the body. This makes sure that the pancreas keeps releasing pancreatic enzymes which help in other digestive processes.

It’s good for your heart

According to medical experts’ people, especially pregnant women are advised to sleep on their left side in order to boost circulation to the heart. Again, sleeping on the left side may help take some weight off the heart. Gravity can help lymph drainage towards the heart and Aortic circulation away from the heart. It doesn’t only help pregnant women boost circulation but also helps ease the weight on the back and keep the uterus from squeezing the kidney and raise blood from the uterus, kidney, and fetus.
