How to Prevent DIABETES

DIABETES

Before we look at diabetes let’s talk little about the hormone Insulin and its functions. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows your system to use sugar from the carbohydrate foods we eat to provide energy.

This insulin helps the human body to:

  • Control blood glucose level
  • Preventing hyperglycemia (excess sugar in the blood)
  • Regulate enzyme activities

The word diabetes by medical experts can be said to be a group of metabolic diseases whereby there is high glucose in the blood or where the body cells do not recognize insulin or its production is not enough. Insulin is released by the pancreas to help our body store and use sugar. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces very little or no insulin or when the body cannot respond appropriately to insulin.
According to statistics released by Novo Nordisk in 2013, over 500,000 Ghanaians are currently living with diabetes. Out of this figure they also noted that 330,000 representing 70% of the total cases recorded, remains undiagnosed.

Diabetes mellitus and Diabetes Insipidus

We have about two types of diabetes mellitus namely

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes may be also known to be insulin-dependent or early onset diabetes
With this type of diabetes the body doesn’t produce insulin it can also be said to be an
Autoimmune conditions where your system attacks and destroys insulin producing cells, bringing about the rise in blood glucose level.
The cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown and it has nothing to do with the food we eat and the drinks we take in.

Types 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is type diabetes where the body doesn’t make enough insulin.
It is characterized by loss of most of the insulin beta cells in the pancreas due to overburdening of the pancreas.

Diabetes Insipidus also know as the Drinkers disease is a disease that cause frequent urination

Diabetes Insipidus is caused by abnormalities of a hormone called antidiuretic hormone (ADH) by medical experts. what does this antidiuretic hormone do?  ADH  also known as arginine vasopressin. The hypothalamus make the antidiuretic hormone, which tells the kidney the amount of urine to conserve in other to keep the volume of your body fluids balanced.
